4 Things You Need To Know About Orthodontics For Adults

Posted on

If you're like many adults who are considering getting braces, you probably have a lot of questions. Following are four things you need to know about adult orthodontics.

It's Not All About Appearance

Many people believe that the only reason for any adult to get braces is because they want to perfect their smile. Although appearance is a valid reason for having your teeth straightened as an adult, it also has other benefits. For instance, both your mouth and jaw areas are likely to change shape as you get older, and this can cause conditions in which your teeth become overly crowded in your mouth.

Crowded teeth present a variety of problems. They make brushing and flossing far more difficult and much less effective, increasing your potential susceptibility to oral health issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. Many people also report experiencing difficulty chewing and speaking as the result of having crooked teeth, and in extreme cases, the condition may cause people to feel pain.

Clear Braces Are Available

One of the reasons many adults hesitate to get braces is because they are afraid of how the braces might make them look — after all, no adult with a responsible job wants to be seen as a teenager. Fortunately, clear braces are available that are very difficult for the casual observer to discern. For important business meetings or other occasions that require an impeccable appearance, you have the option of removing the braces, but it is not recommended that you do this very often — they need to be in place most of the time in order to properly do their job. You should try to leave them on at least 22 hours per day for best results.

You'll Be Able to Take Them Off During Mealtimes

One of the major advantages of modern braces is that you won't have to wear them while you're eating — in fact, it isn't recommended that you leave them on while eating because food particles can easily get caught on them, increasing your chances of developing dental decay.

You Won't Have to Wear Them Forever

The length of time that the average adult wears braces is between 18 and 26 months. The major factor in determining the length of time you'll need to wear braces is how crooked your teeth are. Your orthodontist will be able to provide you with more information.
