How To Cope With A Dry Mouth

Posted on

Some people may notice a dry mouth after eating salty foods, when taking cold medication, or after a night of overindulgence. However, certain people may notice that they are experiencing a dry mouth more and more often. To learn more about this common condition, read on for some dry mouth facts.

It's All About Saliva

In all but the most minor and temporary situations, dry mouth is caused by less saliva production. Saliva plays an important role in keeping your mouth clean and healthy. Saliva is also key to dealing with acids. Acids can be present in your food, drinks, and sometimes, from acid reflux. Unfortunately, acids are not good for your teeth. They are the enemy of your tooth enamel. The more saliva you have swimming about in your mouth, the more ammunition you have against acids and tooth decay.

Where Did Your Saliva Go?

There are several reasons why your mouth feels like the Sahara at times. Many dental patients who complain of dry mouth will fall into these categories:

Medication can cause dry mouth

Many of the most popular medications list dry mouth as a side effect. Those medications are extremely important because they treat serious diseases. For example, many hypertension and stroke medications can cause a dry mouth. However, a wide range of medications that treat other serious conditions can also cause dry mouth. If you suspect that your medication is the cause, talk to your doctor about trying an alternative medication.

Snoring may cause your mouth to feel dry upon awakening

Snoring could be a sign of a serious breathing disorder that needs further evaluation. Many people end up having to use a CPAP machine to ensure their airway remains open. However, some people simply snore because their parents snored. Ask your dentist about surgical treatments for snoring once serious disorders have been ruled out.

Medical disorders can cause dry mouth

One of the most obvious is blocked salivary glands. You can have an infection of one or more of these glands along with a blockage. In some cases, the gland must be removed.

Talk to Your Dentist

If you suffer from a dry mouth, you probably also have some dental problems as a result. Having a dry mouth can be very uncomfortable but also quite harmful to your mouth's health. Let your dentist know that you have a dry mouth so that they can check for cavities more often.
